Exploring the Boudicca Way in Norfolk

The Boudicca Way, named after the legendary Queen of the Iceni tribe, is a stunning long- distance walking route stretching 36 miles (58 km) between Diss and the vibrant city of Norwich. This trail meanders through rolling countryside, ancient woodlands and charming, small villages, offering a perfect combination of natural beauty and historical intrigue. The walk immerses walkers through the pastoral landscapes of South Norfolk.

Along the route, you’ll encounter open fields, hedgerow-lined paths, and remnants of Roman roads that hint at the region’s historical significance. Villages such as Tivetshall St Mary, Pulham Market and Shotesham offer picturesque pit stops and inviting pubs to rest weary legs.

The route is rich in wildlife, with opportunities to spot deer, hares, and numerous bird species. For history enthusiasts, the trail’s association with Boudicca— leader of a revolt against Roman rule in AD 60—adds a fascinating dimension. The area once formed part of Iceni territory, and walking in her footsteps creates a sense of connection to the past.

We recommend investing in a physical OS map to take with you, however, starting from Diss train station, follow signs toward the trailhead and head north east out of the town where you enter field walking sections.

The route is well-marked with distinctive way-markers, along the way ensuring a straightforward navigation. The route skirts past Burston and Gissing, before heading towards Tivetshall and Pulham Market near the A140, where you may wish to enjoy a well earned rest or some refreshment. Continue through to the Tas Valley, known for its idyllic rural views, passing Morningthorpe and Tasburgh.

The route snakes closer to Norwich, entering the village of Trowse, before the trail culminates in Norwich city centre, where you can visit the majestic Norwich Cathedral and iconic castle.

For shorter walks, sections of the trail can be enjoyed individually. Suffolk-based walkers might prefer starting at Diss and exploring the southern stretches before retracing their steps.

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a casual stroller, the Boudicca Way offers excellent walking stretches to enjoy.
